The Helix: Lost Contact
set of repulsors. She gripped the cable carefully and pulled, turning herself around to get some slack, and screamed. It was there. The monster stood at the edge of the open bay, its tentacles wrapped around her tether, pulling, dragging her back to the ship. She fumbled with the clasp securing the cable to her belt. Her hands shook uncontrollably as the creature pulled her toward the ship. It was careening into a terminal velocity with the creature aboard, and it would take her in her last moments. In the few precious seconds before the ship burnt up, she would be ripped apart by the creature’s writhing tentacles as she stared into those eyes that were darker than space itself.
No! You can’t have me!
Amanda allowed the creature to keep inching her towards it as The Helix faded from view. She tilted her wrist to her face and pressed the keys on her onboard computer. The heads-up display flashed an error message.
Cannot disengage seals. Zero pressure detected.
“Override.”
Identification for emergency override.
“My name is Flight Officer Amanda Dawn, pilot of the Opus Prime vessel The Helix. Override!”
Override authorized.
Amanda lowered her arm and blinked twice, not comprehending what she was seeing. The creature stood at the edge of the bay and pulled the cable arm over arm, yanking her towards its lifeless eyes and mouth of tentacles. It howled over the speakers and she winced. Like dozens of voices crying out in agony, the screams surrounded her.
She stared it down as it nearly had her. Then, in a final act of defiance, she pounded the button on her wrist computer. The seals on her suit disengaged and an unfamiliar cold raced up her back. She cried out as space snuck into the suit and froze her through down to the blood and bones. As her vision faded, the creature morphed before her eyes, twisting, changing, and reshaping itself until she looked in horror upon her own face. Her mouth contorted into a hideous smile. Her eyes were two deep black pits.
Above, the klaxon alarm whined through the speakers and her heads-up display faded away.
The End.

David takes his inspiration from the greats and fell in love with complex universes from the desks of Garth Nix, Tolkien, Chris Riddell, and Jonathan Stroud to name a few.
David has always followed his imagination as it dumped him into countless RPG fantasy adventures with his closest friends.
In 2018, David’s wife sat him down and gave him the confidence to tell the epic story he has always dreamt of writing.
