Healed by the Earth Dragon Prince: Dragon Shifter Romance (Elemental Dragon Warriors Book 4)
even the strongest warriors of our kind. Her warm green eyes stare up at me, and when she smiles again, my hearts stop momentarily. My nostrils flare as I draw in her distinct, delicate scent, reminiscent of the kalli flowers that grow near my home.
“We can probably get more done if we work as a team,” she suggests, scanning my body. “What do you say?”
I marvel at her strength and determination. This female is amazing, and I am completely captivated. I give her an affirmatory nod and then puff out my chest, hoping to impress her.
It is a good plan. We can treat many more patients together than separately. “You begin and I will follow, treating whatever you cannot with my healing fire.”
“All right, Kaj.” She smiles. “Let’s get this done.”
I watch in wonder as she moves down the line of beds, tending to as many as she can. She may not possess healing fire like the members of my Clan, but she deftly uses tools and medicine instead to help the injured. I discreetly continue to observe her as I take care of my patients. She is as intelligent as she is beautiful, this female. Despite the severity of her injuries, I am impressed that she performs her job without complaint.
As if sensing my gaze upon her, she glances at me and sends a dazzling smile. I am completely enthralled with Anna.
A sharp noise of protest draws my attention and my gaze snaps to the bed beside me. A human female stares up at me with wide eyes full of terror. “Leave me alone! Go away!”
My brow furrows. “But I am here to help you.”
“No!” she wails. “Leave us alone! All of you!”
Anna rushes to my side and takes the female’s hand. “Enara, it’s all right. They’re here to help.”
“No!” she protests. “They just want to hurt us like those other dragons tried to.”
Anna places a hand on my forearm. “This is Kaj. He’s a good guy. I promise. He helped me, too,” she adds with a smile. “You can trust him.”
I puff out my chest and tip my chin up with pride. It fills my hearts with joy knowing that I have already earned Anna’s trust.
Meeting her bright green eyes, I find myself unable to speak, much less form a coherent thought. “Kaj, this is my friend, Enara. Enara, this is Kaj.”
I bow low. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Enara.”
“You, too.” She gives me a quivering half-smile. “I’m sorry for the way I acted. I’m still a bit shaken up after… what happened.”
I hate that the Wind Clan has caused these females to fear us. This is an entirely new world to them, and they are trying to start a life among our people. Their actions this day have caused the humans to doubt the intentions of all Drakarians. It will take much time to repair the relationship between our two species.
“I understand,” I reply gently, hoping to calm her. “But I vow that I will not harm you. I only wish to help.”
As the female allows me to treat her, I cannot help but think on Varus’s words. These humans have been through much and yet, they are resilient.
I glance down the long row of beds and notice Rakan—Varus’s personal guard—leaning over one of the human females, his expression full of worry. I walk to his side.
Rakan lifts his gaze to mine. “She is still unconscious but stable. Ranas says she will be fine.”
I place a hand on his shoulder. “This is good news.”
“I failed her, Prince Kaj. I did not reach her in time.” He clenches his jaw. “It is my fault Holly was hurt.”
“From what I understand, you and the rest of the Fire Clan warriors are the reason the humans were saved and not taken. Surely, that is not a failure in her eyes.”
It is easy to read in his expression that he cares deeply for this female. I wish I could offer him more comfort, but I cannot. I do not know if these females are like ours. A Drakarian female would never consider a male to be a worthy mate if he failed to protect her in any way. I only hope this human female forgives him.
I give him a parting nod and then glance over at Anna, observing as she treats another patient. She is brave, kind, intelligent and beautiful. Despite what I have heard about her people, they are stronger than they appear. And now that I’ve met Healer Anna, I long to know more about her.
Chapter 3
Anna
Kaj and I work side by side, making our way down each row of beds to tend the wounded.
Out of the corner of my eye, I study him. Tall, spiraling horns the color of jade decorate his head. Long green hair nearly the same shade as his scales falls around his shoulders. With golden eyes, a proud square jaw, and princely features, he’s very handsome—for an alien dragon-man.
His arms and legs are thick and muscular. He’s taller than any human I’ve ever met, and his shoulders are broad and strong. His abdomen and chest are layers of rippling muscle. His long, tapered tail swishes back and forth behind him as he tends to his patient. When I lift my gaze, I find him staring at me. His vertically slit pupils expand as if he likes what he sees, and his lips part in an irresistible smile. I could easily get lost in his golden eyes.
My heart flutters and my cheeks flush with warmth as I return his smile.
There’s just something about him that draws me in. I dart another glance in his direction, admiring his confident posture. He leans down to ask Enara how she’s feeling, and I notice he does his best to make her smile and laugh. He has an impressive bedside manner with his patients.
As if sensing my gaze upon him, he looks up at me and grins again before turning his attention to the
