Lies Behind The Woods
the powerful case it was three years ago. Plus, his presidential campaign is going strong. Does the camera show where John went? Was he alone?”“You mean to tell me there is a cult sicko out on the loose and no one knows it? Whose fucked-up idea was that? But to answer your question, Tim, he went out of the camera view towards the SUV, but I don’t see the SUV getting back on the road or anyone else.”
“The SUV is still here. That helps a lot. I’m guessing he is in the woods trying to escape. I will get a search party started. Thanks, James. Stay by your phone and work on getting that footage to the station for evidence,” Sergeant Tim told James.
“Ok, Tim. I will work on it now,” James replied as they both hung up the phone.
“Sarge, we have an update and some bad news on the SUV.” Officer Hayes handed over a document before he continued. “It seems the SUV is registered to DA Jane Goodwright. I called her office and her cell phone. No one can reach her, and no one has heard from her in the last few hours.”
“All right, listen up. Gather around,” Sergeant Tim announced as the crime scene team and the officers surrounded him.
“We have a possible escaped convict and a kidnapped DA. It is this guy’s motive to kidnap women to marry him for his cult, or whatever he likes to do. We need to search the surrounding woods for evidence and try to catch this bastard before it’s too late.
Deep inside the woods, John heard a helicopter flying overhead. Jane continued to scream, “Steve, Steve, get up!”
John walked over to the river. Picked Steve up by the collar of his shirt as Steve tried to gasp for air.
“It’s just a flesh wound to his shoulder. He’s going to survive. At least for now, that is. Stop your bitching, Jane.”
“We have to go, John. I think the cops are looking for us,” Tara told John as he stood over Steve.
“All right, thanks to Jane. We are walking from here. Let’s move, and don’t slow us down. Your shoulder will survive, and so will your leg.” He told them both.
“We don’t know where we are going,” Jane yelled as Tara grabbed her by the hair to help her on her feet. “I will lead. You will follow. Tara, stay behind and watch them. This time, if they fuck around, shoot ’em in the head,” John said as he started to cross the knee-deep river.
“Even Steve? I thought we needed him alive.” Tara asked John as the three followed him through the river.
“I will deal with Steve and the consequences,” John said as he started the journey through the deep woods.
Steve was worried and curious. Pain was setting in on his shoulder. What is going on? He wondered. Why do they want me and for what? What do they want from me and where are we going? Steve questioned himself as his shoulder was bleeding heavy through his shirt. Over and over, the thought kept on going through Steve’s mind.
The woods were getting darker and the chill in the air was getting colder as the four kept a steady pace deep in the forest, headed to their destination. Coyotes, wolves, and cougars could be heard in the distance while unknown creatures kept running around the blood of Steve and Jane.
Steve and Jane held each other for warmth and comfort. The butterflies in Steve’s stomach made it hard for him to speak to Jane to console her. He was scared for himself. Afraid to die when he got to wherever they may be heading. It seemed like hours went by, and they kept walking with no breaks.
Jane’s feet were starting to get numb as she finally broke the silence. “Steve, I don’t know how much longer I can stand. My leg hurts. My feet are cold and I can’t feel my toes,” Jane said with a small tear running down her cheek.
“How much further do we have to go? Jane needs to rest and it’s cold out here,” Steve shouted to John.
“Shut your bitch ass up and keep moving. This is my show. We stop when I say we fucking stop,” John said without missing a beat, smoking a cigarette.
“Well, can we at least get a cigarette?” Steve asked, holding onto Jane to keep her warm.
“All right, everyone stop. Let’s have a small smoke break so Steve can feel like Superman,” John announced as he handed everyone a stick.
“You know, we wouldn’t be walking if someone didn’t grow some balls and try to cause an accident, then make me kill some random punk trying to be a superhero and then two idiots trying to run off into the fucking woods,” John yelled at the top of his lungs out of frustration.
“You are just a shithead. Why can’t you just escape and leave us alone? What do you want from us?” Steve confronted John.
“Easy, tough guy. I don’t care about you. You were specially requested by someone higher than me. As for Jane, well, she just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” John said with a nasty smirk. “Now, let’s get moving, bitches.”
At the police station, Sergeant Tim and James finally viewed the evidence of the murder committed by John.
“Yup, that’s fucking John Dexter, all right,” Tim said as he zoomed in on the camera. “I just can’t tell if Jane is with him or not.”
“Why would he come all the way back to White Pine when he got caught the first time?” James asked.
“Beats the hell out of me, but we need to get this son of a bitch. This time, he may not make it to jail,”
Tim told James as he closed the computer.
“What do you mean by that?” James questioned, shocked.
“Oh, you know. Cons don’t wanna go back to jail. So, they would do whatever it
